TV-B-Gone gets hot

Post by Recordbreakor »

I recently put together a TV-B-Gone and it worked fine for a couple of hours, but then it wouldn't shut off. It would just turn the TV's on and off, again and again. So I took the batteries out and let it sit for the night, then the next morning I tried it out and it did shut off, but about 15 minutes later I picked it up and the batteries and the infared LEDs where burning hot. I could barely even take them out of the battery clip. I double checked all of my soldering points and make sure everything was looking good, but still every time I put batteries in it gets hot. By the way, these are brand new batteries. I just took them out of the package not even a day ago.

The IR LEDs pulse at 1A, and discharging AA batteries at that rate for any length of time will make them good and hot.

Normally I'd suspect a shorted transistor, but if the device was turning your TV on and off, it was apparently sending pulses. That means there's probably something amiss in or around the switch.

Post a photo of the board and we'll see what we can find.
