I recently had to give up making my own boards. But that turned out to be a good thing because after a bit of hunting I found a place that will make my designs for less than what I used to spend on materials anyway. http://www.circuitboardstogo.com

$6.30 (and up) for single board orders
Shipping is a flat rate of $4.99

They accept about 50 different file types including .jpg and Eagle.

I also found this place http://www.custompcb.com/get_quote.html More board features than the above site but minimum quantity is 2.

Flashbacks for me too. I started with the IC patterns rubbed onto the copper and would then use a fine point Sharpe for the traces. I would even touch up areas with black model paint. Anything that was waterproof when it went into the etching solution. Now, I use ExpressPCB.

Don Lancaster talked a lot about making PC boards with laser printers back in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. I don't know if his techniques would work with current printers, but you can read up on them at http://www.tinaja.com/glib/dirtoner.pdf. With cheap PC board services, this probably isn't practical unless you need to make a fairly large number of boards at home to justify the setup and chemical costs.

That's probably the most common way home circuit boards are made today.
