Some notes on the game grrl

Post by Basement_Modder »

If any of you know me on the other sites, you may know that my "specialty," if you will, is the creation of portable home gaming consoles. The game grrl, which is based of a super joy 3 system, has been said to be unable to play NES cartridges. This is not true. The SJ3 in stock form has a cart-slot for original famicom games, as it is a Chinese unit. You can actually change the cart-slot out with a 72-pin 0.1 in. spacing edge card connector to play American games. On the american NES game, there were a few aditional pins that went to the EXT slot on the bottom of the NES console. This slot, as the one on the SNES, was never used for anything. The pins to the sides of the EXT pins on the NTSC games have the same pinout as the PAL ones. Since the SJ3 has no regional lockout, you can directly attach a new connector no-sweat. This is a suitable connector.
In order to have this only play carts, you must supply 5v to pin 31 like so:

(If you still want built-in games, you may add a switch.)
Now, you must attach wires (ribbon cable is prefered) to each of the 60 pins on the SJ3. (the side that originally had the 60 pin connector on it.) Now wire them using an NES to famicom adaptor pinout and you're golden! It should look like this:

Now you can combine this with the Game Grrl instructions, mount it on the back of the case with 90º brackets, and play the day away!
