USB Vendor ID
Let's pretend for a second that I don't have $2,000 us laying around, what usb vender ID should I choose?

Some chip manufactures will give you a PID to use with their VID. What chip are you using?

atmel, I believe the id is 0x03eb. Are there any others? Perhaps a generic hobbiest id?

there are a few places where you can buy a single VID/PID for about $50

I think Atmel will give you a restricted PID to use, but couldn't find any info on their web site. Send an email to them and ask for one.
I am not aware of any development or hobby VID/PID. If this is only for personal use, then you could just use one from Atmel's sample code.
Anyone who sells a VID/PID pair for unrestricted use is violating the contract with USB-IF and could have the VID revoked.
