Do you own the patents on all your devices?

Post by ch00f »

Firstly, great site. I built my dad a mintyboost last year, and he loved it.

I've made a hobby of building electronics gadgets, and recently, I've stumbled across a design that is simple and very useful with a moderately large potential market. I'm planning on setting up my own website with a business model similar to yours wherein I give the design away for free and sell kits to hobbyists. My only concern is that I've found that my device *might* infringe on a patent and that there are other, bigger companies that sell something similar (with more features) to my device.

I'm posting asking for advice. Have you ever been approached by a lawyer about the devices that you sell? I know I've seen other companies sell devices similar to the mintyboost for example. Are these companies for the most part not concerned about the minor impact you're having on their business? Or do they have no legal standing by which to sue you?
