USB to Serial Cable driver for Mac is NOT FREE!

Post by Ikario »

Hi,
I recently purchased an USB to Serial Cable from here:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/954?& ... cts_id=954
Problem is, I was about to use it on Mac OS X so I clicked the link provided to download the drivers. I couldn't find the driver ready to download on SourceForge, but there was a link to the following page for them:

"RELEASE DOWNLOAD AT PROJECT PAGE:
http://nozap.me/driver/osxpl2303.

I was surprised to see that the driver is NOT FREE and even more expensive than the cable itself! This is not mentioned anywhere in the Adafruit site. Had I known that it would cost me around $12 more to download the drivers, I wouldn't have bought it!
I sincerely hope I'm wrong and the drivers are there somewhere for free and I just couldn't find them, but I definitely won't pay extra for drivers, which means I'm stuck with a cable that I have no use for as I'd rather not use Windows or Linux.

Double post just to mention that I found, somewhere else, a link back to another Adafruit page that had the following link for the PL2303 driver which is NOT the one posted on the store:
http://changux.co/osx-installer-to-pl23 ... on-osx-lio
I downloaded and installed that driver, but hadn't had the time to test it correctly.

Store should be updated with that info.

Wow that is horrible... it was free and open source for like a decade! :(
We'll update the text to point to the new download - you can also try the drivers from Prolific, they have probably improved a lot in the last few years
