desolder pump

hi, i got some question about a desolder pump before i go and buy it, id by happy if someone could answer them :)

what is the difference between vacuum desolder pump \ non vacuum ?
how does it pump the desolder? it cant be from heat because i didnt see it connects to the outlet or something.
can you use the pumped solder?

1. I'm not sure what you mean by this. All of the "pumps" use suction.
2. You heat the solder up with your iron, and suck it away with the pump.

I think the "vacuum" systems have a little motor providing suction - as opposed to the hand-operated ones where you push down a spring-loaded plunger then press a button to release the spring and provide a brief suction.

In both cases, you work with soldering iron in one hand and desoldering pump in the other - you heat up the solder with the iron and when it's liquified, you suck it off the board with the pump.

A third desoldering system uses a braided metal that absorbs the solder by capilliary action - you cut off the end of the braid each time you use it - I didn't ever get the hang of that - so I have a hand-operated pump.

A fourth method is essentially a soldering iron that has suction built into it; these are a lot easier to use since you don't have to quickly switch between the iron and the desoldering tool.
