AVR device not responding , initialization failed, rc=-1

Postby diogotriplox » Sun May 29, 2011 2:04 pm

I´m using a minipov form adafruit´s kit
I´m using Win XP SP3 in a desktop with serial port
My POV sequences through the LEDs when it's powered up. When I connect to serial port the LEDs turn off.

But appear the message into cmd propomt:

c:/minipov3> make program-minipov

AVR device not responding
initialization failed, rc=-1

I checked all connections and the diodes with multimeter
What could be wrong?

Are you using a USB/Serial Adapter, or a serial port?
Have you edited the makefile with the correct port number?

The port in the Makefile is "com1"
If I changed the port appear the message: can´t open the device "com0".

What could be wrong my friends?
How can I check if the AVR was installed correctly ???

I seem to be having the same problem.
OS: XP Sp3
No bridging or cold solder joints
Had another person verify the part placements. Sometimes I look past my own mistakes.
I have editted the "AVRDUDE_PORT = com1" in the "MakeFile". I have tried com1 and com2. The ports under the device manager shows com1 and com2 on my machine.
The device is powered on and has fresh batteries.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

The ports under the device manager shows com1 and com2 on my machine.

Are these native serial ports, or USB/Serial adapters?
Post photos of the front & back of the board.

Direct serial (not USB converter). I will post board pictures when I get home. I'm at "work" now lol.
I did read the read first and promptly did not follow the advise. Sorry!

can you post a more detailed photo of the top? hard to see if the connector is soldered on right

also, if you have a cable involved, try plugging directly into the computer

Sometimes I wonder how I have ever made it through life?! I plugged the mini-POV directly to the serial port and it work perfectly as you designed it. Have a great night and thanks for the advise.
