Hello,
I'm having some trouble. My specs:
kit: MiniPOV3 kit from Adafruit
OS: Mac OS 10.6.8
port: usb adapter that was included in kit
hello world: leds blinked in sequence when I first switched the board on
I installed AvrMacPack or what shows up in /usr/local/ as CrossPack-AVR via the option-1/suggested-method for mac. I'm not sure whether the discrepancy in names there is indicative of my problems or not. I copied the contents of the avrdude-macosx patch to /usr/local/CrossPack-AVR/bin/
When I plug the board into my usb port I get this message:
I don't know what to do with that.
Here's my check for the usb device adapter:
I'm not sure if the fact that the name of the adapter does not match the one in the tutorial (/dev/cu.PL2303-1B1) makes a difference.
Here I run avrdude. The terminal hangs...
...and the led furthest from the serial cable blinks in a pattern, 6 short and 1 longer:
o-o-o-o-o-o-ooo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ooo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ooo
This continues until I stop avrdude with ^C. I'm not sure where to go from here.
Sorry if this is a repeat question but I haven't found the answer in the forums. I'm not sure I know what to look for.
Thanks for your help.

It behaves the same whether the battery pack is on or not.

Re: blinking led but terminal not responsive
Post some clear shots of both sides of the board & we'll look over your assembly.

Re: blinking led but terminal not responsive
I've attached photos below.
I discovered that one of the pins(20) of the chip broke off. This being the Vcc pin I soldered it to the + wire from the battery. It still behaves the same as described in my original post.
Another blunder was that I put one of the LEDs in backwards. I realized this immediately after trimming the leads. I didn't have a replacement so I had to get a little creative with my wiring as you can see below. I put it back in the right way and it seems to work fine. All LEDs blink in sequence as expected when the board is turned on (not plugged in to the computer).
A jumper to get the LED plugged into ground:
The other side of that LED and pin 20 connected to V+.
Thanks

Make sure you have fresh batteries in it. What do you see on the LEDs when the attempted upload is in progress?

Re: blinking led but terminal not responsive
I'm getting approximately 3V out of the battery pack.
I posted a video of an attempt to run avrdude. Sorry it isn't a sharper image. I couldn't get my phone to focus that close. The blinking pattern is as described in my original post. 6 short blinks and one longer one. It is not nearly as bright as when the board plays the pre-programmed sequence.

Re: blinking led but terminal not responsive
That sounds like normal led activity during an upload.
It looks like you have the IC and diodes oriented properly. I can't make out the resistor color bands in your photos so well. Double check all your resistor locations.

Check the other pins and socket contacts on the IC for possible damage also.one of the pins(20) of the chip broke off.
