No sound on outputs (x0xsh0p.de kit)

Post by squonk »

Hi,

I bought a x0xb0x kit from x0xsh0p.de, and just finished putting all the parts together. I have a problem though, I'm getting no sound from either the headphone or the mix outs when trying keyboard mode or random mode.

I have done all the VCO, VCF etc. tests using an oscilloscope while building and they have passed like they should. The leds, buttons and pots appear to be working too, I can switch modes and push the buttons and the leds change accordingly. There's just no sound.

I searched for other 'no sound' problems on the forums, and found a few cases where the BA6110 might have been the culprit, so I measured the voltages there:
1. 5.33V
2. 5.33V
3. 0V
4. see below*
5. 0V
6. 5.28V
7. 5.28V
8. 5.36V
9. 11.87V

*Pin 4 voltage is a bit weird, I seem to be getting a different reading every time I try... sometimes it's fluctuating between 20-40mV, some other times it's between 130-150mV. Sometimes it's ~390mV, sometimes it's ~0V... it should be 0V according to the troubleshooting FAQ? Is this a problem?

There were also suggestions to turn off power and measure resistances between some of the pins of the BA6110, so I did that too:
pin5/pin6: 61.5k
pin7/pin8: 76.2k
pin6/ground: 61.8k
pin8/ground: 15.5k
I've no clue what the correct values of those should be, though...

I'm not really sure where to go from here, so any help would be appreciated!

check for sound at the volume pot
if there isnt any
then check the gate out
and make sure it goes to 12v and back down

do lights and buttons and such work as expected

I'm not sure which of the volume pot pins I should be poking with the headphone so I tried all of them, but there's no sound at any of the pins. But I can hear sound from R162 which is just above the pot? The pitch changes when pressing the keys (or in random mode).

The gate voltage stays around 300mV when no keys are pressed, goes to 11.56 when I hit the keys, and back to ~300mV when the keys are released.

The buttons, leds and pots are working as expected.

thats very interesting
check for sound at pin6 of the ba6110

its looking like a bad ba6110

I just tried this, and there's no sound at pin6. Does this mean the ba6110 is busted?

thats odd
are you sure you had sound at r162

do you have an oscilloscope

short the collector and emitter of q31 together
and see if you get any sound

You mean from the outputs? No, there's no sound when I do that.

an oscilloscope makes this much easier

first off
there shouldnt be signal on r162
make sure youre looking at the right resistor
and check which side of r162 youre probing
one side is 5.333v and other is connected to c40

look for signals on pin1 and pin2
there should be no signal on pin1
and a very small signal on pin2
put your probes to x1 mode if you have that option

then check for signal at pin6 with the scope if you havent done that

then check for gate signal on the r131/q31 connection
it should drop down to a few volts
and then decay back up to 12v
you will need to hold down a key in keyboard mode to test this

im guessing you will see signal at pin2 and not pin6
and will most likley have the gate signal

then check pin4
it should go to about 1v and back down again when a key is pressed
and it sounds like this is where its failing
in which case you should reflow the solder joints on the ba6110
and then try connecting a 220k resistor from 12v to pin4
this will bypass q1-q4
if it still doesnt make sound after that
then the ba6110 is dead

and double check that you have the ba6110
in the correct slot and correct orientation

I'd try this, but I don't seem to have any 220k resistors at hand. Or any spare resistors for that matter. I guess I can get some next week. But on the other hand, the x0xsh0p guys noticed this thread, came to the same conclusion as you did, and a new ba6110 is already on the way. I'll continue this when either I get some resistors or the new 6110 arrives, thanks for all your help so far!

Hey squonk.

I got the exact same problem, also a x0xsh0p kit. All the voltages are ok and i checked almost everything now, please write as soon as you got a fix for your problem, would be very interesting.
Thanks

Ok, I got the new ba6110 in the mail today. I replaced the old one, and now I get sound on both headphones and mix out! Everything else seems to be working too. Now I'll just have to tune the oscillator and put the stuff in the case, and it's acid time!

Thank you very much for helping, guest!

izze: I'm no expert on this, but if you get the exact same results as I did doing the things guest has suggested in this thread, I guess your ba6110 chip might be dead too?

it might be good to post up the datecode of your ba6110
that way others can quickly check if they have a bad part

hi,

all the BA6110 I have in stock are printed with 402 155.
a year ago I bought 1000pcs. we build up to 5 machines per week here and we've never had a problem with the BA's.
but we have learned it might be a good idea to put sockets into the kits for this parts.

so starting today all kits will come with two 9-pin sockets for BA6110 and LA4140.

cheers,

Hi! Exuse me, the datecode of my BA6110 is 029 147 but seems to no work anywhere...i'm not sure that the chip is gone but when i power up my x0xb0x with che chip on ( i've socket this ) and measure any point in the main board and the I/O board where should be 12 Volt i'm getting a 2.80 / 3.00 Volt ! I'm suppose the chip broken becouse when power up whitin this the values comes normaly.
This is exactly ?? Thank you very much for any suggestions...
