a word of advice for the soldering newbies

Post by creekree »

my x0x arrived today, by now i have finished both VCO and VCF.

i realized that it is somewhat possible to use too much solder. the holes are plated thru and a bit wide (i am not saying they are too wide). if you are unexperienced, you might use too much solder, which naturally will come out on the opposite side of the board.
have you noticed how the solder gets sucked into the holes?

you might have "solderballs" on the component side. in crammed areas this may cause shortcuts.
maybe that is where some of the problems mentioned in the forum come from. maybe not.
just make sure to check for shorts on both sides if this is your first project and you just learned soldering!

uhm.. thats all.

Another tip, a good solder joint should really look similar to a Hershey's kiss in shape and be so shiney it actually looks dark or black in certian light. If it looks cloudy or generally misshapen, heat it up again and perhaps apply a bit more solder untill it looks right.
