My Xoxio stop very often !

Post by Fanch92 »

Hi all,

I've got a problem. My xoxio stop playing very often... :?

Now, I cannot play more than one minute! I restart it, and again it stop suddenly!

I upgrade again the firmware but it's the same.

When it hang, connected thru USB to my PC, very often, the USB port, plug and unplug itself (many time per minutes), it sound like a false contact…

Any idea ?

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

No, it stops even if not connected thru USB. I just notice than when USB is connected, when the problem occurs, it starts to plug and unplug and so on. It's not constant, ie : it can occur at 10s, 24s, 1mn, 5s, 45s...
When it stops, the system hang, the led come back to the bank number. Then a can start play back again, but it stop very quickly (in general 3 steps). If I restart the box, I can play again for few second.

A "short circuit" in the back panel... How can I test this ?

it sounds like a powersupply problem
the microcontroller is resetting itself

what value led resistors are you using

check for shorts in the digital section

go through every function thoroughly
and see if it resets on some and not others
or if its related to certain steps or notes

Hi,

The problem is that it's Brian from BC who modified it ! I've absolutly no knowledge on it !
I try to reach him, I hope he will response soon.

How can I check the powersupply ? I've got a volmeter, I can try something, but I need more detailed help ? How can I check the resistors led and we are they ?

Many thanks for help.

im not 100% sure from your describtion but it sounds like it is reboot.

most classic issue with machines rebooting is ac adapters with to low mA rating. what does your say?

do you have another one to try with?

I know people, who are specialist, but of course I've to pay them, it's a shop. I've to check with them, but for now I'm sure I can do something myself.

Do I need to check my AC adapter? Basically, the output of it? I've got a classical voltmeter, but I need a quick training... Can anybody post a link with the basics on "how to check AC" ?

PS : OK, it's look like a reboot, but, when it do this. I can start it again for two, three, or four step, in BANNED no more…. I need to make a total reboot to play again for a while... can it sound like this?

PS2: I attached a picture of my Xoxio. This morning some of the front led was switch on, together. Does it mean something special? One or two time, since I receive the box, all the led switch on, when boot it, and disappear...

i dont know too much about the x0xio
if there is an ic20 which says 7805 on it
measure the voltage on all of its pins

i dont know anything about xoxio either :)

take a look on your ac adaptor and tell what i says about output.

for example:

9vac 500mA

google this by the way!

"how to check AC with a multimeter"

im not dishonoring you by the way. but there are toons of info for beginners!

Yes it can be, for Brian BANNED after sale service.

He assembled my Xox himself, some 18 month ago. I try to reach him since more than 4 weeks, and he don't give any help...
So yes, it become interesting for people who want to buy him a Kit, or a full xoxio assembled, and absolutly want after sales service !

When I connect for the first time on adafruits, it was to check if this guy is OK... He looked like. Now, I've a Xox totally dead... So I share this information, waiting for this guy return.

Hi, I'll try to help with the problem here.
Aside from sending it to me for service I would ask some questions first.

1) Did you use it for the past 18 months with no problem, or did you not use it much and found the problem now that you are using it more?
2) It sounds to me like a power supply related problem. I see from your build notes your x0xi0 uses many different LED's, most with a 220 ohms series resistor. This is quite a demand on the power supply. This problem will usually show up during start-up, when many LED's may be lit randomly, and the power supply isn't sufficient to supply this current at start-up. In this case the microcontroller never gets to reset properly and it doesn't boot up. The micro may also have brown out detection enabled which can make matters worse. The x0xi0's generally ship with a 9VAC/1A power supply, either US/Japan, UK type G, or Europlug type C, depending on where you live. This should be sufficient and I have never had a problem. First I would ask to take a picture of your power supply and post it here or email to me so I can see it.
3) From your comments it sounds like you can use the x0xb0x for a bit before it has problems. Is this correct? or does it get messed up right from start-up?
4) If not the 9VAC power supply itself, the problem is most definitely related to the 5V digital supply. I found the build notes for your x0xi0, including some pics. It looks like your x0xi0 was built into a x0xb0x that you had sent me. If you have a multimeter, the first thing I would do is check the 5V supply. Remove the back cover of the enclosure like in the pic. Try to keep everything else neat and assembled. Connect the positive lead to 5V as shown. Connection the negative lead to ground as shown (pin 2 of J4). The ground connection can be hooked up to any other ground point if more convenient. Turn on the x0xi0 and take note. The 5V supply should read 5V +/- 0.1V. Check to see if it remains constant at 5V. If ok at first keep monitoring while playing a pattern. When the x0xi0 starts to mess up take note again of the voltage. (click on pic below for large version).

Hi Brian,

Sorry for the delay.

1 / No, I use it often. It stop somtimes, but not more than one time per month. Now, I can't play more than one minute, even less.
2/ The adapter

3/ No I can use it, sometime one minutes, but when it stops, even if I restart it, I can't play more than few steps...
4/ OK, I will try, ASAP. If i can't do it myself, perhaps I will send it to guys I know, synth specialist. In this case, perhaps he wold communicate with you.

Ps : What about the led schema I past hereunder ?

Thanks a lot for your help. I hope it will be resolved soon.

Regards,

François
