Overdrive Distorsion : simple circuit

Post by julienvoirin »

Here is a Disto i've developed :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siDmdIAAxAk

Any comments welcome ; i am looking for help in PCB manufacturing for this disto module

Hi julien, nice job!(already told you on the other forum ;)).

what kind of help do you need:

schemes/gerber files?

pcb manufacturers info/contact?

someone to run a group buy maybe? :D

btw.
are you feeding the overdrive circuit with the x0x psu?
what else does it need, on/off switch, overdrive amount pot?

and please share the pattern notation on the third video, it's groovy!

share the pattern notation

9 C# acc slide
10 C#

15 C acc slide
16 C#
what kind of help do you need:
schemes/gerber files?
i've done the eagle .sch. I 'd like someone make the .brd in order to make a bulk order at opencircuit or something like that.
are you feeding the overdrive circuit with the x0x psu?
yes, Vcc and Vss
what else does it need, on/off switch, overdrive amount pot?
it has an ON/OFF for overdrive, a pot for disto amount and a switch for "Gate always on"
.

The more the signal is overdriven, the more the led is bright (heartbeat style).

thanks for the pattern, just played with it , it's amazing how the reverse mode brings even more groove to the x0x.

some more questions:

is there any audible noise with the distortion? seems like there is no extra noise on your videos.

btw, on your latest videos looks like you already stuffed all inside your x0x, it was easy to make all fit?

is there any audible noise with the distortion?
absolutly no noise when no VCO , only crosstalk of x0xb0x ! ((centered position for SAW/SQUARE ; btw, why haven't you referenced that mod x0xers ?? how to do a so simple audio in to filter ??)
i should mesure it, but the device is not in my flat.
looks like you already stuffed all inside your x0x, it was easy to make all fit?
on veroboard it is exactly 2x the area of a SUB D25 ; on a dedicated PCB, it can fit 1 DB25 (including screws and spacers)

People interested by a PCB or Kit ?

judging from the pcb layout the circuit looks simple enough to easily build it on stripboard.
i doubt that a professionally manufactured pcb is necessary here - too expensive, too much hassle (mind you: collecting money, ordering, packaging & sending out the boards, making sure everything goes smoothly and no one gets pissed off etc...).

if you want me to i can whip up a stripboard layout over the weekend for you - this way everyone can build the overdrive without commiting to a pcb run.
just my opinion, but i really think this is the best solution, as you'd make both the guys that can etch pcbs and those who can't happy.

i have no idea what you want to say with this statement - stripboard is a great way to put simple circuits together -
and with a stripboard layout anyone can solder circuits. just make the necessary cuts and follow the component placement layout, no need to etch a pcb (or order one). you can get pretty complicated as well, the MFOS soundlab minisynth is available as a stripboard layout...

so please, oh high and mighty electronics wizard, enlighten me with your most sophisticated knowledge. or not. i dont care too much either way.

stripboard is "un attrape couillon", veroboard is the thing.

i wouldn't say so, it has a PCB. And it sounds bad.
so please, oh high and mighty electronics wizard, enlighten me with your most sophisticated knowledge
i do not need your services, and i won't share my knowledge with you, especially you.
EDIT : what a jerk ! now i remember why I removed the schem

pinheader SV1 :
amount : 10KB pot
pin1 goes to pad+ of c38
pin2 goes to pad- of c38
pin3 goes to free leg of R133
pin4 goes to +12V
pin5 goes to ground
you will have to remove C38 from the x0x PCB mainboard, and reuse it in the circuit (or a new one)
R4 should be adapted to your design (e.g 10k) in order to get same level within and without distorsion

PCB won't be shared to dic**eads.
Notice i do not allow you to sell x0xb0x containing my disto without a tip

Not sure what you were trying to accomplish here creekree, julien just asked about interest in a PCB or Kit run as he wanted to share his knowledge in that way, nothing else and nothing more, what's extra noise about?

Thanks for posting the schematic julien!

sounds nice. would this work if the bcbox i/o mod has already been installed, or is it only for a 'clean' x0xb0x?

of course, the circuit has to be inserted at the place of condensator C38

you can install it alongside the x0xi0 kits.
The two distortion circuits built into the x0xi0 are post volume control and 'mixer'. The input signal is taken at the main output (mix out) of the x0xb0x.
The x0xb0x volume control is the de-facto input level control to the circuit.
The overdrive described here is placed at the output of the VCA before the volume control and before the x0xb0x discrete mixer circuit.
You could install both and use one or the other or both at the same time.

the idea was to still have the audio in available for my drummachine and the distorsion in the headphone too.
"Clever idea, isn't ?" would say the mighty wizard
