Re: 5v regulator
No. That won't work very well because solar power is so variable and most smart phones and iDevices need a steady source to charge.
The way to do it is to use a solar charger and a battery. Then attach the Mintyboost to the output of the charger. This will provide a steady charge current to keep your device happily charging.

It works depending on the device that you want to charge. As adafruit_support said, most smart phones need a constant source. Although not all. Based on my experience the Samsung Galaxy S 1 (the very first one, I-9000) does charge with a simple regulator only (nothing needs to be boosted to 5V there): http://www.fell.it/2012/05/13/solar-pan ... y-s-i9000/. Whereas the new Galaxy S3 gets crazy and all messed up (green screen, reboots in worst case). It stops charging after around 1 minute. Although the phone states that it charges, it draws only 60mA from the power source, that is not enough to run the screen, yet alone the phone.gyan wrote:i was wondering if i can take a powersource such as a solar cell and attach a 5v regulator to the positive and negative wires, then connect those to the minty boost. will this work??? please reply!!!
So I suggest, you try since it depends on your device
