Idiot warning! - i was concentrating so hard on my first foray into microelectronics and soldering that i've soldered the IC socket on the wrong side of the board. Is this going to be a problem? I note from the instruction that orientation on the correct side of the board isn't an issue but the wrong side?

Yes, unfortunately, that will be a problem, as the IC's pins will be in the wrong places when you insert it into the socket.
You will need a solder-sucker or some solder-wick to remove the socket.
