using apple 30 pin connector with minty boost

Post by berko »

I have an iphone 4 and a adafruit minty boost.
currently the minty is wired up as in the tutorial but i would like to take the 30 pin connector off a iphone charging cable that came with the phone and wire it directly into the minty boost. i will need a new tin but this will remove the need to use a cable.
also, the shielding at the usb end of the cable just broke so it is now trash.

step 1 remove the female USB connector from the minty.
and then what? is it as simple as just connecting the wires from the cable to the proper pins?
once i cut this guy open how to i know what wire goes to what usb pin?
is this is just a bad idea or will it work?
thanks!

ok, so i cut the cable apart with my wire cutters.
then i used my multimeter's continuity tester to trace the wires to the usb pins on the usb side.
if you hold the usb symbol up, with the plug pointing away from you, the wires are connected from left to right:
red, white, green, black.
guessing red and black are power and ground. yellow and white must be data.
going to give this a try this weekend, unless anyone thinks i am going to totally kill my minty or my phone.

That is a reasonable guess. The issue of which one (yellow or white) is D1 or D2 is moot if you have shorted the D1,D2 pins on the Minty. Since you have an iPhone 4, it probably follows the new standard, so shorted pins should work.
