I just purchased and built the kit with the "normal" resistor configuation - and it seems to be charging, just not completely. The other day, after having the nano plugged into the 'boost for about an hour, the nano said it was charged. But upon unplugging, the battery icon went down to about 2/3 discharged.
And I'm unclear if it is charging at all while playing. The icon implies that it is charging while playing, but upon unplugging, the battery goes to some lower value than where it started.
Nano charges fine using same cable to PC.
Voltage measured fine with no load.
Help?
Nano 1G Charge + Play?

I know this is an older thread, but I will state my experience with this setup since the question still appears to be open:
I built two MintyBoosts (v1.2) that are in use with Generation 1 Nanos: one for my daughter and one for my nephew. Both were assembled with 15K Ohm resistors, with R5 as a pull-up.
My daughter's Nano will fully charge from the MintyBoost, and about half the time I see her listening to her iPod, she has the MintyBoost attached [rechargeable NiMH batteries to the rescue.] Her technical report on charging and playing at the same time is that, "it does not seem to charge as fast while playing." I then asked if the iPod battery discharges while playing the iPod with the MintyBoost attached, and her answer was, "no, why?"
I have only heard good reports from my nephew, and he and my brother (my nephew's dad) would let me know if it failed to fully charge his iPod.

Preston's report
Preston,
Thanks for your input.
I'm about to do a careful exam of my boost and make sure that all the solder joints are good, etc. Just to be sure. I don't have any other ideas...
