Just assembled, but did something wrong

Post by blockhead »

I tried to find a thread on this, I hope it's not a repeat.

I just put together my third SpokePOV. First two were all fine, but the last one...

On the URL side when I put in the batteries, the bottom seventeen LEDs light up and stay lit (as does the top LED and the one 7 down from the top). When I do a test run, the bottom seventeen stay lit and the top seven do their thing, but the ones in between don't stay lit. The side with the adafruit logo appears to be working just fine.

I assume I got sloppy and did something wrong, but can someone tell me what?

Thanks!

try swapping the attiny2313 chips
check if you put in any of the latch chips upside down or on the wrong side
check also the resistor networks

Thanky Ada,

hmm... swapping chips didn't work (in fact, now the bottom 23 LEDs stay lit). Latches are all in the right place.

I checked the resistor connections with a multimeter, is that checking the resistor networks? Sorry if these questions are particularly dumb. I'm self-taught in soldering, but not really so in electronics yet.

Here's some photos of the work. Resistors are all dot-in-x.

Let me know if there's anything you want a better angle on and I'll try.

hmm
looks OK
so when you put in batteries you dont get the 'spinup' lights, right?

I get the spinup on the side with the Adafruit Industries logo. On the side with the URL, the top 7 do the spinup when they're supposed to, but the bottom 23 stay solidly lit. Usually the top LED stays on as well, but I'm guessing that's from the normal light being on thing. The top 7 LEDs work as they're supposed to, the rest just stay lit.

oh ok it sounds like maybe the second latch down is bad. check the soldering on the first and second latch that connect to those LEDs. they do a little 'bucket brigade' so if one is wonky all the ones below it are too.

Sloppiness it was. When I put in IC5, one of the legs bent back. It took me a good fifteen minutes of staring at latches (even busting out my pocket microscope) before I noticed.

A little backfill and it's all working great now. Thanks!

(Edit: you can see it in this photo if you want to marvel at my incompetence.)
