Colors

Post by Beez65 »

Why is there such a limited selection of colors available? Is it a business thing or is it more that certain colors work better than others with respect to the eye's color response and "persistence"?

I'm hoping to do green. Would that require me to purchase my own mess of LEDS and also the resistor SIPs?

If so, how do I calculate the resistor values? I'm more of a software than hardware guy.

Thanks! :D

you can use any color but almost nobody bought green so stopped carrying it & we stuck to the 3 most popular colors

Ok, so I guess I can order a set for blue and then put in green LEDs and the current limit resistors will be alright?

Thanks for all the blinky fun I'm having! ;-))

I was wondering if it was possible to build one of each colour SpokePOV, (R, G, B, Y) and then use the 4 to make a quad colour image. Would it be possible to purchase the kits and then mix the LED's into one of the SpokePOV's?

Sure!

That would be a little trickier. The LED's are current limited in groups by 10-pin bussed resistor networks. The value of the resistors is different per LED color due to the differing forward voltages of the device. You would have to replace the bussed networks with discrete resistors to mix & match colors on one board.

H ow many LED's are on a BMX sized SpokePOV?
How many resistors are banked together?
What resistance is each bank for the various colours?

thanx

a radical example of spokepov colours would be this
http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=19889

however, since each spokepov drives 60 LED's and they can be controlled independently like you could display a different image on both sides if you edit the firmware in a certain way, you could also create a row of 20 RGB 'pixels' , but you would probably have to use RGB LED's , and then use ribbon cables to connect them to the board... you might have to edit the firmware even more to get the 75hc595 latches (which actually drive the LED's) to reverse the output voltage if your RGB LED's are common-anode

So is this what the people at monkeylectrics did in order to make the multicolor boards they have shown in their video? Also would you ever consider posting on how i could go about doing this?

Different LEDs have different activation voltages and draws, which is why originally the LEDs came with different resistors.

...On that point, how do I make sure I have the right resistors? I thought I read this before (several years ago when I made my first set) but I can't find anything about that now.

The parts list shows which resistor values go with which colors. http://www.ladyada.net/make/spokepov/makespokepov.html
