EJ99's patch looks good to me, with the possible exception of removing the posix bit-banger. Any other freebsd/openbsd/whatever users want to chime in?
I'm way too lazy to build a separate ASCII wxgtk, so I just fixed up the wx spokepov linux build so it works against Unicode or ASCII versions of wxgtk.
I'd like to submit a patch for this. It's on top of EJ99's patch though. Can his patch be accepted into the trunk? Then I can submit a separate patch for the Unicode stuff.

Re: wxSpokePOV ported to Linux
gtk-config does not exist anymore inside the libgtk+2.0 development library package of Ubuntu 9.10.
The ./configure process of wxWidget fails.
Any idea to achieve that with newer versions of libgtk+?

If you can side-by-side install libgtk1.2-dev, that should work. gtk-config is in the file manifest for 1.2, but not 2.0. Not sure what's up with that.

Any chance to find a version of the executable which is statically linked to all needed libraries?
