Making Sliceforms with your laser cutter

Post by asteronimo »

For anyone who is not familiar with sliceforms read John Sharp's book "Surfaces, Explorations with Sliceforms".

Sliceform modelling is a technique which lies happily on the borders between art and mathematics. The models are made from intersecting sets of parallel panels made of paper, cardboard, wood, plexiglas or MDF which slot together to generate interesting 3-dimensional surfaces or objects.

I got so excited by this subject that I wrote some software to create the sliceforms with my laser cutter.

It's a plugin for the free Google SketchUp software, you can find it at Public Art International's website:
http://www.public-art-international.com ... cts_id/200.
There is also a very nice video on the webpage.

Have fun!

so, in the spirit of the laser community here, i have a few suggestions
first off, if you're required to pay for the script then its not really a donation, its a payment
also, the video you use to showcase the script was made by a different fellow, using his own code. not your script. so its a bit odd for you to have a video that doesn't actually belong to you or is at all related to your script on the page
also, on your laser cutting page
http://www.public-art-international.com ... cts_id/114
and http://www.public-art-international.com/
some of the photos don't belong to you, and are from other laser companies. i think if you have a laser cutter it should be pretty easy (and fun) to make your own gallery photos instead of using theirs

You really did get out of bed on the wrong side today, did you?

Any photos or demo videos on my site that were not made by me
just serve the purpose of showing what can "really" be done with
the laser cutter I use and the sofware I write. That's done everywhere
and there's nothing wrong with it, as long as it is really true.

I am a professional software developer and write software for clients
costing thousands of euros. So believe me, asking 10 euros as
donation for software, that can be downloaded from several SketchUp
forums is just a donation. If you are really interested in using SketchUp,
you know where to find these forums.

Furthermore, SliceModeler is a really useful application saving you a lot of money,
if you stop to think about it. Are you really worried about the semantics of "paying"
or "donating" 10 euros for such a useful application?

I think your post doesn't serve the interest of the users of this forum.
Very BANNED.

In most of the sane world, donation has an implication of optionality. In this case, there is no option; as such, it makes it a payment.

But who's quarreling on words...

I had the script attached but asteronimo demanded i remove it
However, he said I can post up the forum post where he attached it:

(you'll need to make a login to download)

As long as you provide proper credit and/or get permission, sure.
If someone used your photos and text for their laser cutting website that would probably make you a little upset (it annoys me for sure). and this forum is for sharing information between laser-users and companies
However I've noted that for the sliceform video, you've added a note making it clear that its just an example.

I have no problem with paying for things that I find are worth it. And nowhere in my comment did I say anything implying otherwise or denigrating your software skills. Its just a little confusing about whether its a donation or payment (since the script isn't for download on that page, but it is on the sketchup forums, but its not OK to post it to this forum)

Anyways, I'll play with it tonight!
