Garbled beep when testing continuity of new EX330

Post by brittspace »

Just playing with my new EX330 multimeter. I've noticed that when testing continuity by touching the two tips together the beep is garbled before finally settling on a solid tone. Doesn't seem to be a problem on circuit connections.

Is this normal or could it be a sign of a faulty connection in the meter?

My EX330 does the same thing. So do my other meters. I think it is because the sides of the probes get a layer of oxidation on them and are not the greatest conductors.

Of the two primary meters I use:

One beeps immediately upon continuity closure, but frequently makes scratchy sounds due to incomplete or light contact.
One has a slight delay built into it, but always produces a clear, steady tone.

I can see the design logic behind both solutions, but it makes one or the other "less than optimal" - or sometimes even useless - for different applications (the unit with the delay, for example, can't be used for toning out brief, momentary contacts). It can be a pain on occasion, but I sometimes need to switch meters, depending on what I'm using them to measure.
