Thermocouple question

Post by johnmccombs »

>1 x Thermocouple Type-K Glass Braid Insulated (K) [ID:270]

Both ends of the wire have some sort of black plastic sheath on the wire, looks not unlike heat shrink.

Is this black stuff really good to 500C, as per the spec on the web page?

The heat-shrink will burn off well before that. To avoid the smell of burning plastic, you can remove it yourself.

Ok, thanks.

So the product page says "Most inexpensive thermocouples have a vinyl covering which can melt at around 200 °C, this one uses a fiberglass braid so it can be used in high temperature measurements such as heaters and ovens." But then the product has a vinyl covering...?!

The braid has a tendency to fray a bit during handling. I suspect that is why they started shipping them with heat-shrink.
