NFC Shield/Breakout board questions

Post by emiskilla03 »

I'm new to electronics, Arduino, and coding. I'm considering purchasing the NFC shield or breakout board from Adafruit here but I'm not sure which one would be best for me. I've read through the posts about the NFC items available here but haven't really been able to decide which one is best for me. I also watched the video and that still left me confused. So my questions is what's the difference between the two? Advantages/disadvantages of both? I have an Arduino Uno. Somewhere I read that since the Uno operates at 5v I'd need some voltage leveler. But in the video the shield is plugged right onto the Uno. Perhaps only the leveler is needed for the breakout board? As in the photos of it there seems to be a chip of sorts included. Also, from the forum I see people posting about FTDI (or something like that) cables. Ideally, I like just being able to plug the shield ontop of the Uno and being done with it. Eventually I'd like to also attach a servo, rgb led, and a button of sorts to the setup. Trying to make a NFC controlled keepsake box similar to one I've found on Instructables as a gift to my cousin. So does the shield work fine with a servo, button, and led? Sorry if my questions seem "dumb". But any help/insight/advice you are able to give is certainly appreciated! Thanks for reading!

For ease of mounting, the NFC Shield would be easiest for you to work with.

In terms of creating an NFC-controlled lock-box, take a look at the following tutorials:

https://learn.adafruit.com/babel-fish
https://learn.adafruit.com/biometric-security-box
https://learn.adafruit.com/reverse-geoc ... gement-box
https://learn.adafruit.com/secret-knock ... rawer-lock

None of them do exactly what you've described, but all the pieces are in there somewhere.
