AR1100 touch screen controller - Error

Post by rootscript »

I am using the AR1100 4-Wire resistive touch controller http://www.adafruit.com/products/1580.
I have downloaded the configuration app and installed the Windows driver. However, the configuration app can't seem to communicate with it.

I am only getting an error:

"Error: Could not change mode to HID. Verify the AR1100 is properly attached"

As you can see from the Adafruit product photo, There isn't really much chance of not connecting it up properly (just plug in the ribbon cable from the screen to AR1100, and connect the AR1100 to a Windows computer via USB):
Image
You can pretty much just plug and play to get started, for more details including calibration software, check out the AR1100 page. Plug any 1mm-pitch 4-wire resistive touchscreen to the on-board FPC connector, when you plug into a computer's USB port you should see a new device and touching the screen will cause the mouse cursor to move around. (Adafruit product page)
I'm using the Resistive Touchscreen Overlay - 7" diag. 165mm x 105mm - 4 Wire - link to product page but not having success with 'just plug and play', and get this error when trying to use the software linked to from the product page: "Error: Could not change mode to HID. Verify the AR1100 is properly attached"

There seem to be a few other people with the same issue.
One guy seems to have found a work around using Virtual Box:
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=55104
Thanks for the link from Adafruit's franklin97355 :)

It seems a bit long winded to have to use a Virtual Box of Windows in Windows to get a driver working, that should work in the first place (Maybe I am understanding it wrong).

After waiting 3 weeks for this to arrive, I have to say I am very disappointed with this product. No matter what I try I get the same errors as most users in this forum. I can get the touchscreen to work, but it isn't calibrated, so it's pretty much useless. The calibration software fails to run, This is far from Plug-and-Play as advertised and considering the number of customers with this issue I think adafruit should have a solution to get this working or remove it from sale, as it does not work as described.

Here is a link to the Docs & Software (found this on the Adafruit product page):
http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/De ... umentation

I appreciate that you guys have a lot of products to support, this one just seems to have got lost along the way.
The issues with this product seem to get picked up, but support doesn't seem to follow it up to an end solution:
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=55104
& another thread here:
http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=47289
So that is a total of 3 support threads, without a solution.

Quoting support from the other thread:

I don't know. You got farther than I did. I finally got hold of one of these, but I'm not having any luck with it.
Can you update us to the status of your investigations, please?

As I've written in my topics exist solution to switch AR1100 from mouse to digitizer and back.
Of course, I've checked mouse and digitizer with android - result ok.

Hello,

Just got the AR1100 and i'm having the same problem. The computer does recognize it and I can move the mouse around with the digitizer, but the calibration tool is just not working, it keeps telling me to check the connections...

Nothing is wrong with the connection.

Any solution to this yet?

Hi,
I received my board today and I was having the connection issue. It's a real shame that Adafruit is selling a board which do not work as advertised (there are also a dev board from AR1100 producer, I think that this will be far better than adafruit one)
I managed to configure it doing this:
- Run wizard
- choose custom setup
- 4-wire
- USB
- switch to mouse
- switch to hid
- calibrate
- switch to whatever you want you could get an error but do not worry about it.

If you do not manage to fin it try to remove from your devices and reboot PC

Hello,

I just received my display a couple of weeks ago and the touch screen is not working on my pi nor a windows PC (I tried 2 windows systems.) The calibration software won't recognize the AR1100 chip so I am stuck. I tried the virtual box method but didnt work either. Please help!

on the microchip.com site, if you search 'ar1100brd' you can find a link for a driver. says its good for XP, 7, and 8. I was having a hell of a time before I found it, works like a charm now.

page: http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/De ... e=en555171

driver file: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/D ... XPUPDD.zip

Okay, it worked a few times, and now its out again and i can't get it to work again. eventually gave up and calibrated it with my usb-ttl adapter. that turned out to be as simple as the usb should have been.

Good evening everyone, I have problem with AR1100. I bought it and I was setting in
USB Digitizer following the wizard with this result:

21:56:06 Wizard set protocol to USB Digitizer
21:56:34 AR1100 USB Mouse Detected. .
21:56:37 Found Tub.dll - Ver: 1.5.0.0
21:56:37 AR1100 Mouse found and operating normally
21:56:45 Found Tub.dll - Ver: 1.5.0.0
21:56:45 AR1100 USB Mouse Removed. .
21:56:48 AR1100 USB Mouse Detected. .
21:56:51 Found Tub.dll - Ver: 1.5.0.0
21:56:51 AR1100 Mouse found and operating normally

after I wanted to try to change but the program does not see the AR1100:

00:38:41 Wizard September dev kit to AR1100 type, number of touch sensor wires to 5
00:38:46 Wizard set protocol to USB Digitizer
00:38:52 Found Tub.dll - Ver: 1.5.0.0
00:38:52 Error: Could not change mode to Digitizer. Verify the AR1100 is properly attached

as soon as I connect it:

0:57:10 AR1100 USB Digitizer Detected. .
00:57:13 Found Tub.dll - Ver: 1.5.0.0
00:57:13 USB AR1100 could not be found.
Please check your connections.

Someone could help me?

That looks like a connection problem.

Make sure the flex cable from your touchscreen is fully connected, and try using a different USB cable.

If it still doesn't work, post a photo of your hardware and connections and we'll take a look.

Exact same issue here.

I was able to set the driver in to USB Mouse mode at some point and it worked fine for a while on the Pi. Then I reconnected it to the PC to change it to Digitizer mode. When I did that, I started getting the errors above and it is now impossible to revert back to USB Mouse mode or to recalibrate the touchscreen. Also tried on a different computer, to no avail.

Because I was able to configure and calibrate it until I switched the mode to digitizer, I assume my setup is fine and it's the driver that somehow became non-functional after changing its mode to digitizer. How do I fix it?

If a fix for this cannot be found, is it possible to get a new touchscreen driver? I can't find them standalone in the store.

Try the AR1100 Configuration Utility: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/D ... yV2.20.zip

The documentation for it is on Microchip's AR1100 page under the Documentation and Software heading: http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/De ... e=en555168

The errors I was describing above were occurring in the AR1100 configuration utility. And I had read all the documentation you are referencing.

If you can't solve the issue, can you at least provide a link to buy just the touchscreen drivers. Replacing the corrupted one I have would do, I would simply avoid changing its settings in the AR1100 configuration utility to avoid breaking it.
