Ultimate GPS Breakout (MT3339) awful sensitivity (or SNR)

Post by esafonov »

I am testing a new Adafruit Ultimate GPS Breakout v.3, and I found it can't do fix for an hour or two. I put it in a plastic box and leave it outside for a 10 hours. It found 4 satellites only, and fix. After doing cold restart it lost them, and... (see a picture). I can't believe it! "Ublox NEO-6M" does much better on the same conditions. Is there any trick with this modules exist?

Did you put a battery in the breakout? The GPS module stores its satellite tracking data in volatile memory, which is lost if you remove power completely. If you give it a battery, the old values are preserved and extrapolated forward, making it easier for the module to get a new fix.
