usbtinyisp and futurlec 8535 boards

Post by rb76543 »

i just got my usbtinyisp and tried it with a futurlec atmega8535 controller board which has a ten pin programming connector that fits the usbtinyisp cable, but seems to be different. at any rate, i didn't get it to work.

so, i connected the spi lines from the usbtinyisp to the port b connector on the futurlec board, took the 5v from the futurlec board to power the 74125 buffer chip, and avrdude worked perfectly once i found the correct atmega8535 code, m8535, and connected the reset line from the usbtinyisp board to the reset pin on the 8535.

all in all, this was kinda messy, but hey, it worked, and that's good enough for me, but, if any of you know what i did wrong with the programming connector on the futurlec board, i'd love to hear from you.

bottom line: adafruit's usbtinyisp + avrdude + futurlec's board is pretty cool.

i also got some other futurlec 8535 boards, the one in their 'development board' category that they call 'atmega8535 educational board', and their at90s8535 development board, so, once i've played with them i'll post the results if they add anything to what i've said here.

later,

rod

they sent me some cds with the boards, and i found this on one of them:

so i tried this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2389/211 ... 4a6a_o.jpg

and it didn't work. i probed the 8535, and ss, sck, mosi, and reset were behaving, but miso was not, just some noise around 0 volts. i tried putting 5v at spi-Vcc but that seemed to have no effect. (note: the cool green programming LED on the futurlec board did light up when avrdude was trying to do stuff, but, well, i don't think anything much happened otherwise).

so i went back to kludge mode, which works fine, as far as i'm concerned:

i'm still loving the combination of avrdude, adafruit, and futurlec. heck, you have to do some of the work, or it's not any fun.

ps. sorry about that... it's usbtinyisp, not tinyusbisp. lol.

(edit: all of the above is for their controller board ET-BASE. their best 8535 board (AVR-SDK2), which i haven't fired up yet, has this pinout:

so, this is yet another layout. )

Was there any resolution on this? I want to install wiring on their remarkably cheap AVR stamp:
http://www.futurlec.com/ET-AVR_Stamp_Technical.shtml.\
It would be nice to just build a custom wired plug for their connector.

i stopped working with that board, and changed to their at90s8535 development board since it has the lcd connector i need:

this board has a slightly different et-pspi layout from the one i discussed originally. i rewired a 10-pin cable and the usptinyisp works fine with this futurlec board.

so, i'm not sure, but i think you should be able to get it to work.
