USBtinyISP got really hot, continued to work after, now does

Post by goldse »

Hi all,

I got a USBtinyisp a couple of weeks ago and had it up and working well for some time. Yesterday night both chips got burning hot while programming an ATmega328P, which had never happened before. I noticed a bit too late, I believe. Now I'd say I probably just fried them, but the programmer worked quite normally right after it had cooled down again. However, now, like 8 hours later, it just doesn't work anymore, the LEDS stay out when I plug it in and there is no communication possible between the usbtiny and my mac.

Is it fried? Should I replace the chips? How can the fact that it worked immediately after, but not now a little later, be explained, then?

Thanks.

Hard to say for sure, but I'd suspect it is fried. Overheating is enemy #1 for chips. If it doesn't kill them, it weakens them and shortens their lifetime.

Right. Is it necessary to buy a whole new kit or can I just buy the blank chips and stick them in?
