Battery connection - heats up, no power

Post by garbageman14 »

Hi all,

I purchased an Arduino starter kit about two weeks ago for a class. The
board works well under USB power, but there seems to be something wrong with
the battery connection. The battery box I put together from the kit works
fine on other boards, but heats up and doesn't provide power on my board,
and would therefore seem like a problem with the battery connection on my
board. Sound right? What else is there to test here? The connections inside the
battery box show no current under a multimeter, but from the connector to the
box inside is fine.

What happens if you put the battery in and turn it on but DONT connect it to the arduino?

Heat happens, same as if it were plugged in.

Ok, is there some sort of guide for that? I'm taking a class learning all this stuff for the first time, we're only on week two, and I only sort of generally know what you're talking about.

Since I appear to have lost the battery charger for my camera, a pic will have to wait. But, opening up the battery connector (I'm assuming that's what you meant), the red wire seems to have a bit of charred black around the connection. I don't smell anything (and didn't at the time I first noticed the heat issue), and it doesn't seem to explain why I'm apparently now getting power from it to my Arduino (which wasn't happening before; one would assume that a short would preclude that, no?).

when you unscrewed the barrel that may have pushed the wires
