Uno r3 nolonger recognized by computer

my trouble started with trying to get usable data thru a serial monitor,.only a string of y charac.Now device manager is no longer seeing the arduino uno r3.It used to function on com 13 but no longer shows as an option in tools.I am able to load thru my usb tiny (shift/upload).help much appreciated...kpc
