Directions to install the proto shield
The "tutorial" to install it doesn't explain anything. I'm hoping someone can provide me with a little more info.

Question about the 6-pin installation:
Do you put the long legs through the board, or the short legs? (It was difficult to tell.)

The short pins go through the board. If you look at the last picture on the page, it's a little clearer

Thanks! I have another question:
The starter pack I have has the Arduino Uno + v.5 protoshield.
I noticed that ...
- The Uno has one 10-pin female header, two 8-pin female headers, and one 6-pin header
- The v.5 has two 8-pin and two 6-pin female headers
Before I solder anything...
Will I still be able to use this v.5 protoshield with the Uno even though it's not a 1:1 match between headers ?
I can fit the v.5 protoshield and Uno together using what I've got, but I'll end up with 4 "orphaned" female pins on the Uno.
Can I proceed with this setup, or is there a different/newer version of the protoshield I need?
Obviously, n00b here.

Two of the "orphaned" pins (at the end of the 10-pin header) are alternate sources of the I2C SDA and SCL lines. Those lines are also available on pins A4 and A5.
The other two "orphaned" pins are across the board at the end of the 8-bpin header. The one on the end is unused and "reserved for future purposes". The other is called IOREF, and will allow future shield designs to automatically adapt to either 5V arduinos or 3.3V arduinos.
Bottom line - the extra pins are not a problem for you. Your protoshield will work fine without them.
