Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
I just received an Arduino Uno R3 (Atmega328 - assembled). Arduino IDE cannot communicate with the board. It shows up under Other devices as ATmega16u2 DFU and on the board, the green and orange lights stay on.

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
Have you tried to install the drivers? The Uno uses an ATmega16u2 coprocessor chip for USB communications.

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
I have tried Update Driver Software in Device manager. Windows 8 searches for driver update but is unable to install driver. I have also tried on win 7 machine.
When I choose the driver folder from Arduino IDE download, it does not find the driver.

The 16u2 should not be in DFU mode. Did you purchase your Uno from Adafruit?

http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Windows
Here is the install guide from Arduino.cc website.
You need to go to the start menu (Win7) right click on computer and select properties.
Then select device manager upper left hand corner.
Select the USB device and right click - update driver .
Then window pops up w/ search automatically or manually browse.
Select manually browse. After that it will show you the path pointing to the driver - select browse (to the right).
Select the path to where Arduino software was installed.
You cannot install drivers from the download file folder. Maybe check program files directory?
You may need to uninstall, and re install directly to the C:\ drive.
Then the drivers would be located at C:\arduino-1.0.3\drivers

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
Yes I purchased the board from adafuit.com.
I have tried updating driver manually and used the drivers directory downloaded with the Arduino IDE. When I choose the drivers folder to look in (with look in subdirectories), it does not find the correct driver and says windows could not install the driver.

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
Try uninstalling The Arduino software and re install it, directly on the hard drive (c:\ vs. program files directory)
Sometimes re installing helps..... I had to do that for my Win7 machine.
I don't have Win8 so I can't help there. Sorry

On the Win 7 machine, I tried moving the installation to C:\arduino-1.0.3 but I get same results for updating drivers.

@driverblock,
How do I correct the "The 16u2 should not be in DFU mode."?

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
Sorry for the trouble, but it looks like your 16u2 must be unprogrammed. Unfortunately, this does happen from time to time. Please contact [email protected] for a replacement. Please reference this thread and include your original order number

Re: Cannot communicate with Arduino Uno R3
I bought the Adafruit ARDX - v1.3 Experimentation Kit for Arduino (Uno R3) - v1.3
(order number 279939).
Unfortunately I was unable to install the driver and the device shows up under "Other devices" as ATmega16u2 DFU.
(I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.)
Is this the same problem that typetrice had?
