The MCP23008 is an 8 bit port expander and I see the referenced i2c LCD board is a 4bit board of some description.

Doubtful that any of Adafruits software will be compatible with someone else's board especially seeing that it does not use the same hardware.

Much easier just to buy the Adafruit i2C backpack. They work perfectly with 16x2 and 20x4 character LCDs which use a 16 pin inline I/O bus.
