FTDI Boadruino and OSX

by justin6735 on Wed Apr 03, 2013 1:51 pm

I am not able to upload code to my BoArduino from adafruit. I am using the Arduino Software and have it set for a ATMega328 Deumilanove But I keep getting the error...

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

I have the FTDI drivers installed and chose it under serial port for the Arduino software.

I am using OSX 10.8.2.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

Do you see any led activity on the Boarduino when the upload starts?

Have you had this Boarduino working before, or is this a brand-new build?

Oddly enough it was working before but I don't think I was using my Mac then.

What was the last sketch uploaded? Does it do a lot of serial I/O?

No, the last sketch is the example blink.

I have removed drivers and re-downloaded them from the internet.

I have even tried using another computer. A Windows 7 Pro x64 new install system. It doesn't work either. (I get a different error).

I am at a real loss here as I really hope to get this working.

Thanks for your help so far.

Describe the led activity you see on an upload attempt.

Do you see any led activity when you press the reset button?

I think I see 3 flashes.

On the upload, reset, or both?

OK I feel like a complete moron that I didn't try this before.... The issue is the Parallax RFID reader is interfering with the upload. I removed it and all is well. Sorry.

2nd question... does the adafruit RFID Breakout board do this during Uploads?

Not sure how you have your Parallax breakout connected. But I haven't had any difficulties uploading with an Adafruit RFID breakout attached.

Just looked up the Parallax RFID reader. It's a serial device, so you've probably got it connected to Boarduino RX and TX, Those pins are shared with the RX/TX pins on the FTDI header, so that's why you have a conflict.

The Parallax board runs at only 2400 baud, so you can easily switch it to a different pair of pins and use Software Serial for communication. That will eliminate the conflict on the hardware serial pins.

The Adafruit RFID breakout can be configured for SPI, I2C, or serial.
