6V 3.4W Solar panel connect to olar Lithium Ion/Polymer char

Post by tyn »

Order two "Large 6V 3.4W Solar panel - 3.4 Watt" (http://www.adafruit.com/products/500) and two "USB / DC / Solar Lithium Ion/Polymer charger - v2" (http://www.adafruit.com/products/390), but I have question, do I need to change the R11 to 1K (change charge rate to 1A) if want to connect the solar panel to the charger? I ask this since I noticed the Solar panel outputs 530mA.

The charge rate will be limited by whichever is lower:
a) the output capacity of the panel
b) the programmed max charge rate of the charger.

To program it for 1A max rate, solder a 2Kohm resistor in parallel to the existing 2Kohm resistor.

Do I solder 2K or 1K to get 1A? on R11? Did I misunderstand it?

Thanks.

You need 1K for 1A. Since there is already a 2K surface mount resistor installed, the easiest way to get 1K is to solder another 2K resistor in parallel. http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/resistor/res_4.html

Cool, thanks. Since I'm a newbie, can you show me how I can solder another 2K in parallel on R11? on the back? front? which two points I should solder to?

Just solder right over the existing surface-mount resistor in the place marked "PROG"

Since I bought two of these charger+panels+Lithium_Battery,
How can I serialize them to offer 7.4V power? Can you show me in detail as well?

I do go through the tutorial, but can the charger do smart load sharing without manually switching a switch?

And do I connect one charger's LOAD+ to another LOAD's- to serialize the battery? Do I need a switch?

You can connect them directly in series without a switch ONLY if you have two completely isolated power supplies. If your power supplies share a common ground (or anything else) you will end up with a short circuit.

So you mean if I charge two chargers using SINGLE solar panel, I will get a short circuit?
Can you explain why is that?

Because the negative terminal of the panel input is connected to the ground. If you try to connect two chargers and their associated LiPo cells in series, you will effectively be connecting the output voltage of one to the shared ground.
