Ultimate GPS Issues

Post by thehobbit21 »

Hello first time poster here so sorry if I break any etiquette.

I purchased an Ultimate GPS v3 about a year ago and wasn't able to break it open until today. I was following the tutorial for this product and I'm on the direct wiring step: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ult ... ter-wiring I have it connected exactly the way they have pictured but I'm not getting any reading on the serial monitor, nothing displays. I set everything up just as they said to in the tutorial. I was also reading the forum post here: http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.ph ... ps#p273116 but there was no resolution to it. I have included a screenshot of the IDE if that helps.

Any help would be much appreciated for this Arduino nood.

Cheers

Just checking but have you uploaded the program to the Arduino? You will need to remove the GPS connections on pins 0 and 1 while you do that.

Yeah I did that. I uploaded it before plugging the GPS in.

Any other options? Or does anyone know how to talk to someone in customer service directly? I would like to have this figured out soon without having to buy another GPS.

Thanks

Could we see a picture of your connections? Does the fix LED blink or is it steady?

Here is a photo of my prototyped GPS. I also tried to do the whole thing again just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I even started by loading the generic blink sketch just to see if the arduino was loading properly. As you can see I get no LED on the GPS after loading the blank sketch from my first post then reattaching everything and plugging the board back in the the computer.

Thanks

You have the communications lines crossed (or NOT crossed as they should be). You need to run TX to RX and RX to TX. Try it and let us know what happens.

That's not how it shows it here. Did they post the picture wrong?

Actually I'm not sure. If you were communicating to the Arduino it would be wrong but in this case you are just passing the data through to the pc so it is probably correct. If it had been wrong we would have heard about it before now. Sorry for the misdirection.

It's no problem. So is there anyway to get a hold of someone from adafruit? To see if they have a solution since I haven't seen a response from them yet.

Cheers

Based on the photo, it appears you have not soldered the header pins to the board. That would make stable operation all but impossible. No need to go any further until good solder connections are made between the header and the board. This is why photos are good :)

For sure they need to be soldered. If you haven't yet please do, I overlooked that when I thought the rx/tx wires were wrong. Let us know either way. Thanks WethaGuy

So I will chalk this one up to being a newbie. The fact that I didn't solder it was the only problem. I really just didn't think about and feel quite silly but all is working now. Thanks for all the responses.
