Substitute for the 2N3806\PN2907 PNP in TV-B-Gone

Post by Agent24 »

After making my own TV-B-Gone as described here my friend wanted to make one himself.

When I made mine, I bought the parts mostly from Farnell (especially the Transistors, LEDs and IC)

For the PNP transistor I used the PN2907AG from On Semiconductor

Unfortunately, these are now not sold by Farnell anymore. Of course Digikey has them, but I am not going to pay $50 shipping for a 10 cent transistor!

I would use the 2N3806 as in the parts list but Farnell don't have that either! (and didn't before, which is why I used the PN2907)

What else is suitable for usage in the TV-B-Gone? Would the BC327 be OK? Or is there something special about those transistors listed in the parts list?

The BC327 looks good.
2N4403 is also good if you can get it.
Nothing special about the PNP, anything with hfe > 100 and Ic max > 200 mA would probably work.

For anyone else who reads this, I recently was told the replacement is the MPS2907AG.

If you're just doing a small run of units, why not just get a bag off ebay?

That would probably be fine for a lot of people but if you just want to build one of them it's cheaper to buy an equivalent or replacement transistor locally.

Note that it's even worse in my case because as I am in New Zealand the average cost of shipping a bag of transistors here from USA or China etc would be about the same as buying them locally, not to mention then the cost of the transistors themselves.

Hit thaishopetc on ebay up, guy does decent discounts when you combine and unlike hong kong and china, their airmail isnt totally backlogged into the month+ long territory. Everything I have got has worked so far, but I am not using them for anything critical, just some TIP120s on halogen lights and some other random transistors. They do a good job packing them too.
