DIY IR emitter parts

Post by mario1776 »

I am interested in building an IR emitter so I could use my computer like a universal remote. The emitter should be able to transmit IR codes using Infrared LEDs connected to the speaker port (as described at http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Inf ... hone-iPod/).

I think I have already successfully used an IR receiver to record IR signals from remote controls, but I do not have the IR LEDs to build a transmitter. I'm putting together an order for Mouser and I am hoping that someone here could tell me which IR LEDs I should buy. I know they are supposed to be 940nm, but Mouser has dozens of IR LEDs that meet that specification and I do not know which one would be appropriate. Also, the IR emitter described at http://www.hackint0sh.org/f131/35975.htm includes a 10 ohm resister. Could anyone advise whether the resistor is necessary, and if so which resister from Mouser would be appropriate. I know I should be able to figure this information out for myself but I'm not terribly experienced with this type of work. The IR emitter appears to be very simple to put together, but my problem is I just don't know what parts to use out of the dozens that are listed on Mouser. Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated.
