Multiple problems with my Tv-B-Gone

Post by Whoadie »

I finshed soldering the tv-b-gone kit and tested out the LEDs with my computers webcam. they were lit up, but would not turn off untill I removed the batteries. Nothing happened when I pushed the button, they didn't even blink, just lit up. Despite working in the first test, the green LED will not light up anymore. Also, the transistors and infared LEDs begin to overheat after haveing the batteries in for a few seconds. I'm 99% sure these problems are related to my sloppy soldering job. Oh, and I had to solder the black wire to the back of the board because I clogged the hole with solder. I am not able to attach the photos, keep getting an error message about the file being invalid(its a jpeg). Instead i have uploaded them to photobucket and put the link below.

Looks like a few questionable solder joints there. You might want to re-work the board with a clean, hot iron. Remove any large blobs that could cause a short. And make sure that the solder has flowed well onto both the pins and the surrounding solder pad. Keep a damp sponge handy to clean the tip after every couple of joints.

Check the soldering tutorials for other tips and examples. http://www.ladyada.net/learn/soldering/thm.html

I redid some of the solder points that looked ify but had the same problems when i put the batteries back in. I also realized that I forgot to solder the leds to the top of the pcb, would that be causing the problem?

Yes and no. The board uses Plated Through-Holes so as long as the soldering is done correctly on either side, it will be connected to both sides anyway.

However most of your solder joints aren't the best, and could be causing the problems.

I have circled two on the board which look good. You should aim to get them all looking like those.

To make sure you're soldering properly, watch this video carefully. It's very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4
