Mega TV be gone array

Post by brenryan »

Hi All,

I have recently ordered a TV-B-Gone kit, the pack of 25 IR LED's

here
http://www.adafruit.com/products/388

and some NPN Bipolar Transistors (PN2222)
https://www.adafruit.com/products/756

As I am quite a novice I would just like if somebody could confirm if it is possible to, and if I'm lucky maybe briefly describe how I would go about creating a super array, such as;

http://www.instructables.com/id/Ultra-TV-B-Gone/

Please don't flame me for not searching properly!! I tried and can only find instructions on modding the original TV-B-Gone. So if what I'm asking for has been discussed, a link would be nicer than an insult :P

Thanks for reading and for any suggestions, appreciate any input...

If I understand your intention correctly, all you need to do is replicate the V1.2 tvbgone's circuit for driving the LEDs.
The number of LEDs you can drive depends on the amount of current your PS can supply. I'd recommend using an external supply for powering the LEDs, instead of using the Mega's 5V directly.

Thanks for getting back to me.

What I had in mind was to use a 9v battery to drive a big array of IR LED's, similar to the Instructable I linked to above. Then drive the circuit with 2 x AAA batteries, as there won't be much drain as the 9v will power the LED's.

I was just hoping somebody could describe how I would go about achieving this. Should I only use 1 transistor instead of the 4 on the board and then connect my own transistor instead of an LED, have that drive the array with my 9v ps and then use the GND from one of the LED connectors to ground my 9v ps?

As you can see, I'm not very experienced. I can solder ok and will be able to put it together, just need some help to figure out how to do it...

Just copy everything attached to pin 5 of the attiny85 in the schematic, starting with R1. You can omit R2.

When the attiny drives pin 5 high, the LEDs turn on.

Ok, I think I should be able to get it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Will post results once I'm done...
