What's wrong with my TV B Gone?

Post by peter pancake »

I soldered my kit together according to the plans given on the site and I fear that my kit was defective when given. I put it in following each step and yet the IR LED's have been on for almost an hour and a half to two hours without turning off and the green indicator LED hasn't turned on at all.
I checked the connections and they seem in the right place.

Why won't the green indicator light turn on and why won't the IR LED's turn off? Since I soldered it I can't return it and since it's not working I am 100% DISSATISFIED. It said "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and I'm sad to say that is false.

Post photos of the front and back of the board and we'll check your assembly.

I tried last night but the photos won't copy to my computer.

Also sorry about my rudeness, I was just EXTREMELY angry and disappointed. It's probably my human error, but I wouldn't know where since I followed the instructions. It's been about 14 hours now and the green light hasn't turned on but the IR LED's has been on this whole time.

The drop-box links appear to be locked. Try using the "Upload Attachment" tab below the message edit window. There is a 1 meg limit. If you resize to about 800x600 you should have no problem.

I didn't see that but I was trying to look for it, thank you.

I'm going to be going to school soon and I'm going to see if my electronics teacher could help me while I'm away from the computer. If not then hopefully you guys have some advice. Hopefully I didn't mess it up completely (to the point of not able to fix it).

Thanks for trying to help me, I really appreciate it, and I'm sorry about my rudeness earlier (just saying it again in case you didn't see).

Can you get a sharper photo of the solder side? It's a little out of focus, but it looks like your transistor legs are bridged together on Q1-Q4.

Yeah, I figured it out at school. It was those four things (can't remember the name off the top of my head). Will 3904 work instead of 2222? My teacher has those in electronics and I want to make sure if those would work or not.

I'm starting to get satisfaction, I will be satisfied once I fix it (if I don't ruin it in the process).

3904's will probably work, but if you can find some Pn2222s, they are a better match.
Pn2222's are pretty common and inexpensive. Radio-Shack might have them locally. We sell them 10 for $1.95 http://www.adafruit.com/products/756

My electronics teacher said it would be fine but I just wanted to make sure.

So I have a side question that might be fixed when I get the last 2222 out and then insert the new ones, but the green light won't turn on but the IR led's stay on. Does it only turn on if it works or if it gets power?

The green light indicates that the processor is powered and running. You should have seen it flash at this stage in the assembly:

Most likely the shorted transistors were feeding full power to the IR leds and starving the processor. Once you remove the old transistors, test again before installing the new ones. You should see the green light flash.

Okay, well today in electronics I should be able to get the last one out and put the new ones in.

Thanks for your help, I hope it works after I get the new ones in.

Sadly it's taking a while to get the transistors out.
