The kit seemed to test OK but I assumed I had accidentally pressed the switch. When the batteries are inserted the light blinks but the IR LEDs don't seem to activate, the battery holder doesn't make contact unless squeezed from both ends, and the blinking light defaults to on, shutting off when the switch is pressed.
Please suggest what to try.

FOUND PROBLEM
OK, turns out it's just the battery holder. It doesn't make contact with the battery on one side and every time it's squeezed, the unit's funtion starts all over again, producing (my) confusion.
