TV-B-Gone not working at all after assembly.

Post by ttg »

Hi there,
I purchased a TV-B-Gone and assembled it today, but it doesn't seem to be working. I've checked the electricity on the LED lights, and there doesn't seem to be any.

Does the green indicator led light up?

Check the markings on the transistors. Q5 should be different from Q1-Q4.

If nothing happens at all, chances are you have a bad connection somewhere in the power circuit - R1 looks a bit shaky, so does pin 4 (GND) of the MCU, but it's hard to say with the blurry image. Try retouching those connections that do not look well connected with the soldering iron.

After messing around with the power supply a bit, the light now blinks but TV will not turn off.

Check the transistor markings as suggested above.
Touch up any suspicious solder joints. This guide will help you there: http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guid ... n-problems
When viewed with a phone or web-cam, do you see any activity on the IR leds?

Every now and then the light will work normally (blinks), but still no IR signal. I'll check out the solder joints.

That sounds like one or more intermittent connections. Most likely a solder issue.

Boy, from the photo, it sure looks like Q5 is installed wrong.

The flat side of the transistor should be facing the edge of the board.

Here's the TV-B-Gone webpage...

https://learn.adafruit.com/tv-b-gone-kit

Scroll down the left sidebar menu to find the link to "Download the PDF" which has complete instructions.

Just above that link, though, is one labeled, "Single Page."

Clicking that will give you one of the most complete, online, step by step directions that I've ever seen (scroll way down the page to find it.)

This way you can make sure you have all the parts you need to finish the project.

Good luck with it!
