I have a RPi and have pretty much just been doing step by step auto install stuff that I've found online. A friend of mine started watching videos class on a site that rhymes with yolinda. Just looking over his shoulder I felt like it was probably intended for gradeschoolers. I love the tutorials here on ada, but starting with a 555, then I went to arduino, and now Pi, I'm having a hard time understanding the difference or 5v and 3.3v And current. Did I skip over something? There are equations to work out what goes where but I can't understand what without how and why in this case. I usually get this very quick, but not so much this time! I can build and program everything just fine. I know what goes where and what line of code does what - But I don't understand enough about why a certain cap works better than another or why a 5v battery will burn out a 3.3v system.
Sorry for the dumb questions, I just can't figure out what I missed.
I got it on software but ...

Have a look at this site - it starts with the basics and gets you up to speed on electricity:
