Hello, I recently purchased the USB+Serial backpack with LCD screen found Here.
I'm interested in the backpack, I was wondering how I could go about making my own custom firmware after I found out the firmare for it is open source Here.
Now I understand on the downloads page for the custom firmware that it states adafruit does not officially support flashing custom firmware but I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to flash custom firmware on this backpack. It is an atmega powered board using the teensy framework, so there has to be a way of flashing custom firmware, I am novice with C and would love to make some custom firmware for this. they did release the firmware after all. Thank you all.

Many of the atmega processors can be programmed with the USBTinyISP : https://learn.adafruit.com/usbtinyisp

Could you tell me if any modifications should be made to the backpack itself? The diagram shown is a bit confusing because its split up in sections.
