Fried arduino anybody?

Post by ericgu »

Today I was playing around with a meter of the RGB strip. It was working fine, but I wasn't getting full brightness and the power LED was dimming, so I as clearly drawing more power than the LED could supply.

So, I hooked up my benchtop power supply to power the strip, which would have been fine, except that I forgot to disconnect the 5V from the arduino, which means I was sending 5V back into the arduino. The magic smoke didn't escape when I turned it on, but it was close; it got hot enough to put out that burnt electronics smell and stopped working.

I'm looking for opinions on whether I fried just the ATMega, or whether I fried the whole board.

Thoughts?

Hard to say. It would only cost about $6 to find out for sure.

You applied 5V from an external supply to the 5V pin of the Arduino?

That wouldn't fry the ATmega328. Maybe the on-board voltage regulator...
