Servo door lock. Need to be able to use key

Post by cbell39 »

Hello. I am planning on building an arduino door lock that networks with my server and lets me unlock my front door with an android phone. I want to be able to still use my key on the door. I was planning on connecting a servo straight to the door lock handle by fitting 3d printed piece to the lock latch. My only problem is that with a servo directly connected to the lock latch I do not think I will be able to use my key. I heard that turning a servo by hand (or in my case, by key) is harmful to the servo. I guess I have two options: Use something other that a servo to unlock the door (stepper motor perhaps) or use some gears to engage and disengage the servo to the door lock. Currently I am leaning more towards the clutch idea. What are your opinions on the matter?

Why not use an electric door-strike? Your lockset will function normally, but the latch can be released electrically.
