My Serial Port COM9 has vanished

by kcranley on Thu Jan 10, 2013 12:04 pm

I have been successfully running my Arduino Uno R3 on my Win XP PC's COM9. However, although the Arduino is still powered, the Arduino software can no longer identify COM9. I have tried plugging in to different USB sockets, but this makes no difference. Can you please help?

The operating system typically assigns a different COM port number when you change USB sockets. Your best bet is to use 'Device Manager' to determine the appropriate COM port number.
- Connect your Arduino to a USB socket
- Click on 'Start'
- Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'
- Select 'Hardware' and then 'Device Manager'
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT) by clicking on the + sign
- Look for the USB Serial Port to determine the COM port assignment

Thank you for your help. I discovered that the problem was due to the fact that I had not pushed the USB connector fully home. I was getting power, but not all connections had been made.
