Hi. I'm thinking of buying the Wave Shield for a project. I also need 9 or 10 pins free to light some LEDs at the same time though. I can't tell from the Wave Shield info, does the shield leave some pins free to allow me to do this?

Free pins on the shield are detailed in the FAQ: http://www.ladyada.net/make/waveshield/faq.html
You may also want to consider digital led pixels. You can control many of these with just a couple of pins:
