Mystery component on Yun board?

Post by [email protected] »

Thanks! Just received my Yun from Adafruit and am getting ready to set up the WiFi...

Say, what's that 'mystery component' on the front of the board, at the upper right corner of the MIPS shield? Looks kind of like a micro switch with the button missing--shown on the Arduino layouts and images on your site and Arduino.cc, but not openly identified. Could it be something like an external antenna connector for the WiFi, or is that just wishful speculation?

Cheers!

I sure does look like an external antenna socket, but we don't know anything about it. Maybe ask over at the Arduino forums...

OK. Here's the reply from the Arduino Forum: http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=188976.0

you guessed right. It is an antenna connector to extend the WiFi range.
The form factor of this antenna connector is called "U.FL"

PS

Which means it could be used with one of your antennas (http://www.adafruit.com/products/944) and the adapter cable (http://www.adafruit.com/products/852), yes?

That ought to give some more range for those roaming WiFi robots, etc.

Have not tested that combination myself, but it should work.

Has anyone gotten the u.Fl adapter to work?
It does not seem to fit.

I coaxed/forced the Adafruit RP-SMA to uFL adapter [.../852] into the socket and attached a dipole antenna [.../945].
Running the included example "Signal strength sketch":YunWiFiStatus, I saw no increase of signal strength. Perhaps I damaged it when attaching it?

It may not be a U.FL connector after all?
just found this . . . http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=188976.0

hope that helps
